I believe Amam is doing a terrible job. It has been launching one political campaign after the other for the past year ridiculising sectarianism, confusing sectarianims and communalism, and equating them with division and underdevelopment. This ideology is not new. It can be traced to the 1920s and it has marked the Lebanese constitution since its adoption in 1926 (c.f. article 95).
Amam’s campaign is fighting the only positive development in the past few years: communalism is no longer taboo, people are expressing their communal belonging and fears freely and openly. The expression is new, but the feeling old. Now that it is expressed, maybe the country can start addressing it.
Instead of doing that, AMAM is fighting this very expresssion. It claims that “confesionnalism” (a term that encompasses communalism and sectarianism in their socio-cultural and political dimensions) is a social ail. Hence, all its campaigns that denigrate the Lebanese society and portrays it as bigoted and sectarian. Here they’re mocking an imaginary private company, in another campaign they are mocking social and professional interactions “parking for maronites”, “doctor for shiites”, “greek-orthodox specialist”…
Amam’s claim is that
ya khayye.. leave it as it is.. no one can do anything for Lebanon.. its gonna go to “al-kharab”… khalas.. ya 2 govs… ya NATO forces ya civil war.. ensa.. akhshav anahnu be mashehu hamur..
We all talk about Lebanon the message, the constitution, democracy and freedom of speech, yet we see different approaches to the way it should be ruled; and it’s not something recent, it even existed before the war broke up in 1975!!!
I think a referundum should be made in order to really know what people want away from their “polluted religious / political leaders”!!!
Only then we can renew ourselves and try to find out the best way to rule this sacred and beautiful country.
