JOL.ORG Exclusive: Jewish Artifacts in Northern Lebanon
June 21st, 2007 at 5:54 pmRecently purchased in northern Lebanon at an antique dealership. The second picture is from a Church which was certainly a Synagogue in the past catering to Lebanon’s Jewish sons.

Very interesting… Especially that menorah chandelier… I wonder what the antique dealer thought about it… Or if he even knew what it really was…
But I’m sceptic about the second picture… Even if the hypothesis that this church was previously a synagogue, it is also possible that it always was a church: the start of David is a motif that is very often present in church and profane architecture in Lebanon… For example, the old church of Broumana (built by the cruisaders apparently), has 2 stars of David directly above a series od crosses(I can provide pics if the admin is interested)… Also, many buildings have the 5 pointed star as window frame decoration, most often in “lucarne” style round windows, in one of the departements of AUB campus for example, lol… I noticed this feature in many other buildings…

Hmm, i dont find this surprising! I have 2 menorahs that I bought from the Sunday Flea Market (souk el ahad). There is also a shop that sells Shofars here, with a star of david encrusted on them. I dont see whats so strange?
