Exclusive Photos: Sodeco Jewish Cemetery in Beirut
July 11th, 2007 at 3:40 amPhotos taken in recent days of a Jewish cemetery in Beirut. One of the ideals outlined by JOL.org is the rehabilitation and clean-up of the Jewish cemeteries in Lebanon. The emotional ramifications are worthy our attention, and in due time, we hope to clean up these sites.

There used to be a family living there taking care of the cemetery I believe. This was some 3 years ago. Nowadays, whenever I pass by there, I always make sure to take a glance at the cemetery just sort of to make sure that it’s still hanging there, although there don’t seem to be any family living there anymore.

Look closely at the second photograph, there is a Star of David molded into the steel and the building looks fairly new (perhaps renovated).

I entered the cemetery in 2003. I was stopped by a guy belonging to the family living there. They were Amal Loyalists. He asked me why I wanted to enter. I told him I just wanted to watch.
Anyways, I entered and I collected few names from the tombs. Now the cemetery is locked.
and yes, Hussein’s Hebrew is in a pretty bad condition.
Thanks!

I’d like to know more about tha family living there : were they hostile when you went to visit, or rather protective?
Anyways, I think Hesbollah already speak Hebrew, I read on the reuters website that they launched a website in Hebrew, among other languages, a few months ago …
I don’t however
So I would welcome the lessons too. In Paris, however.
Peace.

The family that used to live there was calm but used to ask a few questions to the people entering the cemetery.
When I entered it in 2004 however, the door was open and there was noone to stop me. I saw several tombs that dated from the late 70s and 80s.
In 2005, the wall of the cemetery was in bad shape, curving towards the street, practically about to break, this is when the municipality of Beirut (I think) rehabilitated it and painted the outside walls, as well as the Star of David.
But it is closed ever since…
Great site, I hope more people in Lebanon will adhere in time to your project
