March 19, 2008: The last vestiges of architectural heritage beyrouthin fall under the bulldozers of Solidere
Amine-Jules ISKANDAR, Architecte DPLGAt Wadi Abu Jmil, three buildings, however classified, could not resist the bulldozers of Solidere. Today, instead of the three buildings, jewels of the architectural heritage beyrouthin, there is now a heap of stones.
In a letter to L’Orient-Le Jour, and that we reprint below, Jules-Amine Iskandar, an architect, objected to this attack on the memory of Lebanon:
“Remember the Qana massacre. During the days that followed, journalists had visited almost all south of the country to realize the magnitude of
Disaster. At the same time, enjoying the shock in the country and the fact that all the attention was focused on Qana, the company Solidere had precipitated its bulldozers at Wadi Abu Jmil to shave a dozen buildings. Samir Kassir and his team were unable at the time that lament the loss of these evocative of the architectural heritage beyrouthin. Upon returning from southern Lebanon, there was nothing left to do. Only three buildings in multiples to the synagogue had escaped the ravages.
Today, as the Lebanese are taken by the politico-economic crisis, and that the press is entirely focused on the collapse of institutions, the bulldozers have quietly resumed their work. The last three older buildings are ruptured Wadi then razed. Still, it is more than a heap of stones.
For years, however, the walker could see clearly visible on the front of each of them, a notice signed Solidere and threatening to arrest anyone would affect only one element of these buildings classified. Today, it is especially forbidden to venturing into the corner with a camera. This explains the bad resolution photos taken with a mobile phone.
We are witnessing, once again powerless, the disappearance of our architectural heritage, culture and identity. These buildings represented the last testimony of an era, which was the golden age of the Jewish community beyrouthine. “

Again and again this is the Hariri family policy since the early 1990’s destroying all architectural heritages all over lebanon for their own pesonal fortune and wealth not caring about history or the people, that is one of the reasons the March 14 present goverment led by the Hariri family will not share the power with the oppositions so they can not lose the power to steel and because they don’t want a goverment that can held them and their goons responsible for their theft of billions of dollars they ammassed, Lebanon is almost 50 billion dollars in debt because of Solidere Rafic Hariri the father borrowed the money under the goverments name to built Beirut and deeded Beirut and Solidere to his name and family fortune with the help of his dear friends the lebanese politicians & the Syrians power politicians during their occupation, he paid them billions of dollars, and guess who’s paying for it your family, my family and all the poor people that suffered by having their property taking from them with low prices with the help of the corrupted judges that were under his payroll, that is Solidere my friends. you know what they say every dog has his day.

STOP THIS HYSTERICAL HERITAGE GENOCIDE!
RAISE YOUR VOICE…SHOUT:
ENOUGH IS ENOUGH FOR BACKWARDNESS
YES FOR PROTECTING HERITAGE SITES OF THIS HOLY REGION. TODAY OF THE ONLY MULTICULTURAL COUNTRY IN THE ARAB WORLD - LEBANON!
SPREAD THE WORD. MAKE THIS AWFUL-TRUE-BREAKING-NEWS INVADE THE WORLD.
THANKS MR. ISKANDAR FOR ACTION- THANKS L’ORIENT LE JOUR FOR POSTING.
THIS “GENOCIDE” HAPPENED IN THE HEART OF BEIRUT. THE LOCATION AS DESCRIBED IS SURROUNDED BY BUSINESS CENTRES THAT ENGLOBE HUNDRED OF LEBANESE EMPLOYEES/PEOPLE.
HOPE DAY WOULD COME WHEN LEBANESE INDIVIDUALS STOP BEING INDIFFERENT, SELFISH AND CARELESS. IT’S HIGH TIME THAT THEY FIRMLY TURN TO BE A CONSCIOUS CIVIC CITIZEN FOR A CONSCIOUS CIVIC SOCIETY THAT CAN REPORT, CALL, TAKE ACTION, DO SOMETHING…. BEFORE SUCH BACKWARD ACTS TAKE PLACE.
HOPE DAY WOULD COME WHEN JOURNALISM IN GENERAL, REPORTERS IN PARTICULAR, WOULD REGAIN ONE OF ITS MAIN TASKS: LOOKING, SEARCHING AND HONESTLY REPORTING…TO PREVENT A CULTURAL DISASTER AS SUCH TO HAPPEN BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE.
EVER HEARD ABOUT ALERT…AWARNNESS OR RINGING THE BELL??

Today, I just sent an email to Solidere that they can continue ONLY if the new lands and properties are to be enquired by our Jewish expatriates abroad. However, even I have my doubts, as always.
This blog should create a petition to get everyone’s attention against Solidere’s project and, at the mean time, I’ll inform Maghenabraham.com about the email I sent, since I told the guys at Solidere to speak to them before doing anything foolish in Wadi Abu Jamil.

I will speak as a Lebanese Jew LIVING my entire life in Lebanon. Solidere kicked us out of Wadi Abu Jmil, they made it almost impossible to remain in our homes. They promised to renovate our Synagogue in exchange for destroying the Salim Tarab Jewish School and they never did. Yesterday I was banned from going to Wadi Abu Jmil by the Hariri mafia, Solidere employees, call them what you want.
Omar, those who sold their property to Solidere sold it because they never came back and wanted anything they could get- they are in the minority. The majority were kicked out, given practically nothing in exchange except a small check.
OUR HISTORY IS BEING ERASED !
